ABOUT OUR FOUNDATION

The South Plains Kidney Foundation (SPKF) is a local, non-profit organization originally founded in 1972 and re-formed in 2012, focused on providing care and resources for patients with chronic kidney disease and urinary tract disease. We are not affiliated with any national organizations; therefore, all donations and support directly impact those in communities across West Texas.

DID YOU KNOW?

There are over 1,000 people on Dialysis in the Lubbock Area! Many of these patients have to travel longer distances to their treatments, which most insurances do not cover. Some treatments must occur three days/week and can last up to four hours!

FACTS ABOUT KIDNEY DISEASE

  • Approximately 1 in 3 adults with diabetes has chronic kidney disease (CKD).

  • More than 1 in 7 American adults has chronic kidney disease (CKD), and as many as 9 in 10 don't know they have it

  • About 1 in 5 adults with high blood pressure has CKD.

  • Adults with heart failure also have a higher risk of CKD.

FACTS ABOUT URINARY TRACT DISEASE

  • 1 in 5 women will have at least one UTI in their lifetime.

  • Women are more likely to develop UTIs than men because women have a shorter urethra, which makes it easier for bacteria to reach the bladder

  • Those at increased risk for UTIs also include diabetics and men with enlarged prostate glands

  • If not treated promptly, the infection can travel up to the kidneys and cause more serious problems
